  • Do you think age of the creators factors into the success of a book these days? I just looked at these 8 new DC titles with AARP members helming of most of them. Some of those guys have been at this for 40 years. I believe Marvel's so far ahead in terms of creativity, freshness of ideas, diversity and overall grasp of culture because you guys give young creators room (not that you don't have some old people smell too.) I'll take Willow and Marguerite over Titans rehash any ol' day.

No, I don’t think age of the creators factors into the success of the books, not so much as the skill of the creators and their ability to remain fresh and relevant. This is an industry that hasn’t always been kind to its forefathers, to the people who created the stories that the modern generation of creators read that made them want to do this in the first place. And it’s understandable–tastes change, and each successive wave of creators builds on the work of the ones that came before them. Neal Adams doesn’t feel quite so revolutionary in a world that includes Bryan Hitch–even though Bryan would not exist without Neal (and without the guys influenced by Neal that even more directly influenced Bryan.) That all said, every creator is different. A young creator isn’t intrinsically better of fresher than an older creator. What is imperative is that you realize the situation that you’re in–that you’re constantly competing for your next assignment, and that you can never afford to rest on your laurels–and even then, there’s no guarantee of steady work past a certain point.
